  • Air Flow (CFM): The airflow rating is the most important item to look for. It indicates how much air is transported in a minute and is expressed as CFM (e.g., 3 CFM or 5 CFM), with a higher value indicating faster performance.
  • Pump Power: Check the horsepower (HP) rating to understand performance capability. Common variants include 1/4 HP and 1/3 HP models.
  • Stages: Vacuum pumps are either single-stage or two-stage. A two-stage pump provides superior deep vacuum capabilities due to its internal design.
  • Gas Ballast: This feature allows the pump to handle high water vapour loads without contaminating the oil immediately.
  • Large Oil Reservoir: A larger reservoir helps dilute toxins, reducing the frequency of oil changes during a job.
  • Size and Performance: Ensure the pump meets the tonnage requirements of your specific application, whether it be cold storage, industrial chillers, or rooftop units.

  4. Charging: Add fresh refrigerant before testing the system.

The Importance of Evacuation

Only refrigerant and oil should circulate in a system. Air entering during maintenance brings nitrogen, oxygen, and moisture, which cause significant damage:

  • Head Pressure Rise: Causes higher discharge temperatures, reducing system efficiency.
  • Acid Formation: Moisture reacts with refrigerant/oil to form acids. This leads to sludge, electroplating, and degradation of the compressor motor insulation—often resulting in expensive compressor failure.
  • Sludge Buildup: A mix of oil, acid, and moisture clogs filter driers, strainers, and expansion devices.

You must establish a state of near-vacuum to eliminate all undesired moisture and chemicals. This lowers the internal pressure below atmospheric pressure (which is 29.92 in. Hg or 760,000 microns at sea level).

Microns Matter

A typical system requires a vacuum of 300 to 500 microns. You must use an electronic vacuum gauge to measure this accurately. As the pressure drops, moisture inside the system boils into vapor at ambient temperatures, allowing the pump to remove it.

Pump Mechanics

Rotary vane mechanisms are employed in these pumps. 2-stage rotary vacuum pumps are best at producing the deep vacuums required for HVAC. While more expensive, their ability to properly remove moisture makes them the preferred choice for technicians.

  • Oil Level: Always use a sight glass to check oil before operation.
  • Anti-Suck-Back: Ensure it has a check valve to prevent oil from sucking back into the system during power outages.

  • Design: Two-stage is preferred for refrigeration.
