HVAC Vacuum Pump

Know more about one of HVAC's most important tools: The HVAC Vacuum Pump!

After refrigerant recovery and cooling system repair, the HVAC vacuum pump removes gas, vapours, and other impurities from refrigeration systems. Before recharging with refrigerant, a deep and full vacuum is essential to guarantee the Air Conditioning system is clear of pollutants.

Our heavy-duty HVAC pumps feature a design to generate a deep vacuum and pump down swiftly. They can reach 40 microns in hours rather than the days or weeks a light-duty pump might take.

Choosing the Right HVAC Vacuum Pump

When choosing a vacuum pump for refrigeration systems, there are various things to consider in addition to vacuum performance and evacuation time. Here are a few characteristics of great HVAC pumps to think about while making your decision:

  • Air Flow (CFM): The airflow rating is the most important item to look for. It indicates how much air is transported in a minute and is expressed as CFM (e.g., 3 CFM or 5 CFM), with a higher value indicating faster performance.
  • Pump Power: Check the horsepower (HP) rating to understand performance capability. Common variants include 1/4 HP and 1/3 HP models.
  • Stages: Vacuum pumps are either single-stage or two-stage. A two-stage pump provides superior deep vacuum capabilities due to its internal design.
  • Gas Ballast: This feature allows the pump to handle high water vapour loads without contaminating the oil immediately.
  • Large Oil Reservoir: A larger reservoir helps dilute toxins, reducing the frequency of oil changes during a job.
  • Size and Performance: Ensure the pump meets the tonnage requirements of your specific application, whether it be cold storage, industrial chillers, or rooftop units.

Vacuum Pump for Air Conditioning

When an air conditioning system is serviced, a vacuum pump removes undesired air and water vapour. The process typically follows this order:

  1. Recovery: Remove the refrigerant and store it for later use.
  2. Repair: Perform diagnostics and fix any leaks or issues.
  3. Evacuation: Use the vacuum pump to remove air and moisture.
  4. Charging: Add fresh refrigerant before testing the system.

The Importance of Evacuation

Only refrigerant and oil should circulate in a system. Air entering during maintenance brings nitrogen, oxygen, and moisture, which cause significant damage:

  • Head Pressure Rise: Causes higher discharge temperatures, reducing system efficiency.
  • Acid Formation: Moisture reacts with refrigerant/oil to form acids. This leads to sludge, electroplating, and degradation of the compressor motor insulation—often resulting in expensive compressor failure.
  • Sludge Buildup: A mix of oil, acid, and moisture clogs filter driers, strainers, and expansion devices.

Operation of an Air Conditioning HVAC Vacuum Pump

You must establish a state of near-vacuum to eliminate all undesired moisture and chemicals. This lowers the internal pressure below atmospheric pressure (which is 29.92 in. Hg or 760,000 microns at sea level).

Microns Matter

A typical system requires a vacuum of 300 to 500 microns. You must use an electronic vacuum gauge to measure this accurately. As the pressure drops, moisture inside the system boils into vapor at ambient temperatures, allowing the pump to remove it.

Pump Mechanics

Rotary vane mechanisms are employed in these pumps. 2-stage rotary vacuum pumps are best at producing the deep vacuums required for HVAC. While more expensive, their ability to properly remove moisture makes them the preferred choice for technicians.

Selection Checklist

When choosing an air conditioning vacuum pump, keep the following in mind:

  • Oil Level: Always use a sight glass to check oil before operation.
  • Anti-Suck-Back: Ensure it has a check valve to prevent oil from sucking back into the system during power outages.
  • CFM Rating: Higher CFM means faster evacuation.
  • Design: Two-stage is preferred for refrigeration.
  • Ultimate Vacuum: Check the micron rating capability.
  • Portability: Consider weight and intake fitting sizes.

Testo Surface Probes: Complete HVAC Guide Australia

contact-thermometerRica Francia Macaspac

Surface temperature probes are one of the most-used tools on a working HVAC/R technician's belt. When you need an accurate temperature reading from a pipe surface, motor housing, compressor case or coil, contact measurement gives you something an infrared gun simply cannot: direct thermal coupling with the surface itself. This guide covers probe types, accuracy factors and how to pick the right Testo surface probe for every job.

Testo 115i Clamp Thermometer: Pipe Temperature Guide

The Testo 115i is a wireless clamp thermometer built for HVAC/R technicians who need fast, reliable pipe temperature readings without holding a probe in place. Purpose-built for superheat and subcooling calculations and refrigerant charging workflows, it connects via Bluetooth to the Testo Smart App so both hands stay free for gauges and service valves. This guide covers who should use it, how to get accurate readings, and where it fits in your toolkit.

Surface Temperature Measurement in HVAC Australia

Surface temperature measurement runs through almost every aspect of HVAC/R service work — from refrigerant charging and compressor diagnostics to coil performance checks and motor overheating detection. Getting it right means using the correct probe type at the right location, with proper contact and insulation. This guide maps the main surface measurement tasks to the probes and techniques that deliver accurate, reliable results in the field.

Testo Temperature Probe Kit: Surface Air Immersion Guide

Most HVAC/R technicians carry more than one temperature probe — and for good reason. Pipe surfaces, motor housings, air streams and liquid temperatures each call for a different probe geometry. A Testo temperature probe kit gives you a matched surface, air and immersion set in a single purchase, all using Type K Class 1 thermocouples that work with any Type K meter you already own. This guide covers what's in the kit, when to choose it over individual probes, and how each probe type is used in the field.

How to Use Surface Temperature Probes Correctly

Surface temperature measurement is one of the most common diagnostic tasks in HVAC-R — and one of the most frequently done wrong. A dirty contact surface, poor probe placement, zero insulation from ambient air, and reading before the display has settled: these four mistakes alone account for most of the inaccurate results tradies bring back from the field. This guide covers correct technique from surface prep through to documentation, so every reading you take is defensible, repeatable, and actually tells you something useful about the plant you're working on.
