Clamp Meters
Clamp meters are one of the fastest ways to check current draw on compressors, fan motors, heaters and control circuits without breaking the circuit. How to choose the best clamp meter for HVAC work
1) True RMS (important on modern equipment)
Inverter-driven systems (VSD/VFD), electronic control boards and “non-sinusoidal” loads can throw off basic average-responding meters. A True RMS clamp meter is the safer pick for accurate readings on modern HVAC gear.
2) AC only vs AC/DC clamp meters
- AC clamp meters suit most standard compressor and fan motor checks.
- AC/DC clamp meters add DC current measurement (handy for broader electrical diagnostics and certain control applications).
3) Inrush / start current capture
If you diagnose hard starts, nuisance trips or marginal start components, look for an inrush feature so you can capture the brief startup current spike.
4) Microamps (µA) for flame rectification work
If you work on gas heating (flame rectification), a meter with a microamp range can save time when chasing intermittent flame-sense faults.
5) LoZ (Low impedance) mode for ghost voltage

Clamp meter tips that prevent wrong readings
- Clamp one conductor only: If you clamp active + neutral together, the magnetic fields cancel and the reading can drop toward zero.
- Centre the conductor in the jaw (and fully close the jaw) for best accuracy.
- Use True RMS when measuring distorted waveforms (common on inverter/VSD equipment).
