Standard manifold sets follow a universal color code to prevent cross-contamination and safety hazards.

Choosing the Right Fitting Size

  • 1/4" SAE: The standard fitting for R22, R134a, and R404A systems.
  • 5/16" SAE: Required for most modern R410A and R32 mini-splits (to prevent connecting lower-pressure tools to high-pressure systems).
  • Low-Loss vs. Ball Valve:
    • Low-Loss Fittings: Automatically close when disconnected to prevent refrigerant spray (burns) and loss.
    • Ball Valves: Manual shut-off valves inline (usually 6 inches back from the tip) for precise control.

Common Questions

Do I need special hoses for R410A and R32?

Yes. R410A and R32 operate at significantly higher pressures than older refrigerants. You need hoses rated for 800 PSI working / 4000 PSI burst pressure, typically with 5/16" fittings.

How often should I replace refrigerant hoses?

Every 3-5 years. Even if they look fine, the rubber becomes porous over time, allowing moisture to permeate in. Replace immediately if you see cracking, bulging, or if the gaskets are worn.

Can I use my charging hose for evacuation?

Not recommended. Standard 1/4" charging hoses are too narrow for efficient vacuum work. Use a dedicated 3/8" or 1/2" Evacuation Hose to speed up pull-down times.
