Description
The Testo 477 LED stroboscope is your go-to tool for checking the speed and condition of rotating or vibrating machinery without having to shut it down. It's a real time-saver for maintenance teams and techs needing to diagnose issues on the fly.
Anyone who's tried to eyeball a fast-spinning fan, belt, or coupling knows it's a blurry mess. This stroboscope cuts through that, letting you see movements as if they're in slow motion or even frozen, right here on a dusty rooftop or in a busy plant room.
Best For
- HVAC technicians checking fan motors and ventilation systems.
- Industrial maintenance crews monitoring production lines, pumps, and conveyors.
- Quality control inspections of printed goods, textiles, and packaging machinery.
- Anyone needing to measure rotational speeds or analyse vibrations without stopping equipment.
Compatibility
The Testo 477 is designed for a wide range of mechanical inspection and rotational speed measurement tasks. It's suitable for most industrial and commercial applications where you need to analyse fast-moving objects or systems up to 300,000 RPM. Its trigger input and output allow for connectivity to external systems or control via an external sensor.
If you're running a different model, check fittings and specs before ordering.
Features
- High Measurement Range: Delivers up to 300,000 flashes per minute (fpm) for accurate rotational speed measurements of even the fastest components.
- Bright Illumination: Offers up to 4800 Lux illumination at 6000 FPM / 30 cm, making even small, hard-to-reach objects clearly visible.
- Extended Battery Life: Provides up to 5 hours of operation with standard AA batteries, or approximately 11 hours with NiMH rechargeable batteries at 6000 fpm, for uninterrupted work.
- Robust IP65 Housing: Integrated impact protection and an IP65 rated housing ensure durability against dust and water splashes, suitable for tough site conditions.
- External Trigger I/O: Features trigger input and output for seamless integration with external systems or sensors, allowing for synchronised control.
- No Reflex Marks Needed: Measures rotational speed without the need for reflective markers, preventing production shutdowns.

Using It on the Job
- Identify Your Target: Make sure the area you're inspecting is safe to approach and visible. Check for any rotating parts that might not be obvious.
- Power On & Adjust Settings: Turn on the Testo 477 and select your initial flash rate. If you know the approximate RPM, set it close to that value to start.
- Sync with Movement: Adjust the flash rate until the rotating or vibrating object appears stationary or in slow motion. This frequency matches the object's rotational speed.
- Inspect for Irregularities: Once synced, visually inspect the component for damage, wear, vibration hotspots, or any unusual movements that would be invisible at normal operating speeds.
- Record Findings: Note down the measured fpm/rpm and any observations for your service report or maintenance logs.
- Clean and Store: After use, wipe down the IP65 rated housing if needed and return the stroboscope to its carry case to protect it for the next job.
Limitations & Safety Notes
- Always follow site-specific safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols for machinery, even when using this tool for non-contact inspection.
- The stroboscope is not a substitute for proper machine guarding or physical safety checks.
- Ensure adequate lighting in the work area to reduce eye strain, especially during prolonged use.
- Follow all relevant Australian standards and Safe Work guidance for industrial maintenance and machinery operation.
- Only use the recommended battery types (AA or NiMH rechargeable) to ensure optimal performance and battery life.
Tradie Pro Tip
When setting the flash rate, you might see a 'frozen' image at multiples or fractions of the true RPM. Slowly increase the flash rate until you find the highest speed where a single, clear, frozen image appears. That's your true operating speed, saving you from chasing false readings.
Pair With
Pair your Testo 477 LED Stroboscope with a quality infrared thermometer for non-contact temperature readings, or a vibration meter to get a full picture of machinery health. Consider a general inspection camera for visual checks in hard-to-reach areas.
