Description

The Testo 470 tachometer is your go-to tool for checking the spin of motors, shafts, and fans, and even the pace of conveyor belts. It handles both optical and mechanical measurements, giving you a solid picture of rotating components or linear movement in one handy unit.

When you're troubleshooting a noisy fan motor or optimising belt speeds on an old air handler, having a reliable tachometer means you can pinpoint issues before they cause bigger headaches. It's a real time-saver on site, especially when you're working overhead or in tight plant rooms.

Best For

  • HVAC technicians checking fan motors, compressors, and pump speeds.
  • Industrial maintenance teams performing routine machinery inspections.
  • Tradespeople needing to measure rotational speed (rpm) or linear speed/length for various mechanical systems.

Compatibility

This tool is designed for general rpm, speed, and length measurements across a wide range of mechanical systems including electric motors, shafts, fans, pumps, conveyor belts, and rotors. It works effectively for systems where a reflective marker can be applied or mechanical contact can be made.

If you're running a different model or system, check fittings and specs before ordering.

Features

  • Dual Measurement Modes: Offers both optical (non-contact) for RPM up to 600mm, and mechanical measurement using an adapter with a probe tip or wheel.
  • Simple One-Hand Operation: Designed for ease of use, allowing you to operate the tool and take readings with one hand.
  • Data Storage: Records mean, maximum, and minimum values, plus the last reading, making it easy to track performance changes over time.
  • Versatile Applications: Measures rotational speed (rpm), linear speeds, and lengths, suitable for a broad range of diagnostic tasks.
  • Complete Kit: Supplied with a softcase, self-adhesive reflective markers, adapter, probe tip, two measuring wheels, batteries, and a robust transport case.

Using It on the Job

  1. For optical measurement, ensure the target area is clean. Apply a self-adhesive reflective marker to the rotating object.
  2. Power on the Testo 470 and select optical mode. Aim the visible red beam at the reflective marker from a distance of up to 600 mm, ensuring a clear line of sight.
  3. For mechanical measurement, attach the adapter and either the probe tip (for rpm) or the appropriate measuring wheel (for linear speed/length).
  4. Carefully apply the probe tip or measuring wheel to the centre of the rotating shaft or the surface of the moving belt, maintaining stable, firm contact.
  5. Read the measurement on the LCD display. Use the 'Min/Max/Mean' functions to capture a range of readings for diagnostics.
  6. After use, power down the unit, clean any dust or debris, and store the tachometer and all accessories neatly in its transport case to protect it from job site wear.

Limitations & Safety Notes

  • Not for use on live electrical components without appropriate electrical safety training and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Ensure stable and controlled contact when performing mechanical measurements to prevent kickback or damage to the unit or object being measured.
  • Maintain a clear line of sight and avoid direct eye exposure to the visible red beam during optical measurement.
  • Only use within the specified measurement ranges for optical and mechanical RPM, speed, and length to ensure accuracy and prevent damage.
  • Always follow Australian Safe Work guidance and your site's specific safety protocols when working around machinery and rotating equipment.

Tradie Pro Tip: When you're trying to get a stable optical reading on a dusty or uneven fan blade, clean a small patch first. A clear, flat surface for your reflective marker makes a huge difference to the accuracy, especially if you're measuring from a bit of a distance.

Pair With

Pair with vibration analysers and sound level meters for a full diagnostic suite when assessing rotating machinery, or add it to your general toolkit alongside a quality multimeter and clamp meter for comprehensive troubleshooting.
