Description

Eliminate the guesswork on your next install with the Mastercool 70079 Adjustable Torque Wrench. In the HVAC trade, "tight enough" isn't good enough—especially with high-pressure refrigerants like R410A and R32. Over-tightening cracks flares, and under-tightening causes leaks.

This professional-grade tool gives you the precision you need to meet manufacturer warranty specifications. With a robust chrome-plated body and a non-slip knurled handle, it is built to survive the back of the ute and daily site use. The adjustable jaw fits flare nuts up to 38mm, making it a versatile "one-tool" solution for split systems and commercial units.

Best for: HVAC technicians and installers who need certified accuracy for flare nuts and critical mechanical connections.

Compatible with: Standard flare nuts and hex fasteners up to 38mm (1.5").

Mastercool 70079 Adjustable Torque Wrench (10-110 N-m)

Features

  • Certified Accuracy: Every wrench comes with an official factory calibration certificate. You get guaranteed accuracy within ±3%, ensuring you meet Australian standards.
  • Wide Range: Covers 10 to 110 N-m (7 to 81 ft-lbs), which handles the torque requirements for almost all common copper pipe sizes from 1/4" up to 3/4".
  • Built to Last: Tested to 10,000 cycles at 60% load. This is double the ISO 6789 standard requirement, so you know the spring won't sag or lose tension after a month of use.
  • Easy Adjustment: Features a clear laser-marked scale on the handle. Just unlock, twist to your target N-m setting, and lock it back in.
  • Interchangeable Head: Uses a standard 9x12mm mount. You can swap the adjustable jaw for other heads if your job requires it.

Why "Certified Accuracy"?

In the modern trade, proof of quality is everything. Here is why the included certificate matters:

  • Warranty Protection: Many AC manufacturers now require proof that flare nuts were torqued to spec to honour a warranty claim.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing your tool is accurate to ±3% means you can sleep easy knowing that flare isn't going to leak.
  • Professionalism: Showing a client you use calibrated tools builds trust and justifies your service rates.

Using Your Mastercool Torque Wrench: Step-by-Step

  1. Unlock: Pull back the lock ring on the handle to allow adjustment.
  2. Set Torque: Twist the handle until the scale aligns with the required N-m setting for your pipe size (check the AC unit manual for specs).
  3. Lock: Push the lock ring back into place to secure the setting.
  4. Fit to Nut: Adjust the jaw to fit the flare nut tightly. Ensure the wrench is perpendicular (90 degrees) to the fitting.
  5. Tighten: Pull smoothly until you hear and feel the "Click". Stop immediately. Do not pull past the click.
  6. Reset: After the job is done, dial the torque setting back to the lowest value before storing. This preserves the spring's accuracy.

Limitations & Safety Notes

  • Storage is Key: Always store at the lowest torque setting. Leaving it wound up high will weaken the spring over time and ruin the calibration.
  • One Way Only: This wrench is designed for tightening (clockwise). Do not use it to loosen seized nuts, or you may damage the internal mechanism.
  • Handle with Care: Dropping a torque wrench can knock it out of calibration. Keep it in its case when not in use.
  • Recalibration: For daily trade use, it is recommended to get torque wrenches checked/calibrated annually.

Mastercool 70079 FAQs

Does this fit 3/4" and 7/8" nuts?

The jaw opens up to 38mm. A typical 3/4" flare nut is around 33mm, so it fits easily. Some 7/8" nuts might be right on the limit, so measure your fittings first.

Is the head removable?

Yes, the head detaches. It uses a standard 9x12mm rectangular spigot, so you can attach other compatible crowfoot heads if needed.

Does it measure in Newton Metres (Nm)?

Yes, the scale on the handle has clear markings for both Newton Metres (Nm) and Foot-Pounds (ft-lbs).

How often should I calibrate it?

Standard industry practice is once every 12 months or after 5,000 cycles, whichever comes first. If you drop it hard, get it checked sooner.
