Can I use this tool on hard-drawn copper pipe?

No manual tube expander can stretch hard-drawn copper out of the box—the pipe will simply split. If you are working with hard-drawn copper, you must first heat the end of the pipe with your oxy-torch to an annealing temperature (dull cherry red) and let it cool. Once annealed (softened), this Javac expander will cup it perfectly.

How do I swap the expander heads?

The JMTE100 features a simple, threaded quick-change mechanism. Just open the handles fully to retract the inner spreader cone, unscrew the current head, and thread on the new size. It takes less than 10 seconds to swap sizes on the job site.

Will expanding the pipe weaken the joint?

Not at all! In fact, a properly expanded slip joint is often superior to using a factory coupling. Because you are only making one braze joint instead of two, you mathematically cut your potential leak points by 50%.
