Description
The Honeywell Universal Intermittent Pilot Ignition Module S8610U (HWS8610K) is your go-to replacement for a stack of older intermittent pilot controls. This module handles ignition sequencing, flame monitoring, and safety shutoff for central furnaces, residential boilers, and other heating appliances using an intermittent pilot system.
Out on a job, having a universal module like this in the truck means you can sort out a breakdown quickly, without needing to track down a brand-specific part. It makes fault-finding and repairs a lot simpler when you're dealing with a range of different older systems.
Best For
- HVAC service technicians and installers
- Gas fitters working on residential or light commercial heating
- Maintenance teams for property management
- Competent DIY owners replacing existing intermittent pilot modules
Compatibility
This S8610U module is designed to replace over 400 intermittent pilot ignition modules from various manufacturers, including White-Rogers, Robertshaw, Johnson, and UTEC (HSC). It works with existing intermittent pilot burners and supports both Natural Gas (NG) and LPG systems. It's suitable for single rod or dual rod/remote sense applications. The module also combines with Q345, Q3451, Q3452 ignition modules and Honeywell VR8204, VR8304 or VR8345M combination gas control valves. It's equivalent to Honeywell/Resideo PN: S8610U, S8610U3009 and Brivis PN: 80008897, B008897. If you're running a different model, check fittings and specs before ordering.
Features
- Universal Replacement: Directly replaces a wide range of intermittent pilot ignition modules from multiple manufacturers, streamlining your spare parts inventory.
- Integrated Safety Shutoff: Provides 100 percent pilot gas shutoff if the pilot fails to light, ensuring safety in heating appliances.
- Repeated Ignition Trial: If the pilot fails, the module features a 6-minute delay before repeating the trial for ignition, continuing until the appliance lights or the call for heat stops.
- Dual Fuel Compatibility: Fully compatible with both Natural Gas (NG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) heating systems.
- Versatile Sensing: Works reliably in both single rod and dual rod/remote sense flame sensing applications.
- Spark Cable Adapters: Includes necessary adapters to allow field replacement without needing to change existing spark cables, saving time on the job.

- Cross reference guide
- Installation instructions
- Assorted accessories for easy replacement
- Spark cable adapters
Using It on the Job
- Isolate Power & Gas: Before starting any work, ensure power is isolated at the main switchboard and the gas supply is positively shut off and locked out. Verify zero energy state.
- Identify Wiring: Carefully photograph or sketch the existing wiring connections on the old module. Use the supplied cross-reference and instructions for the specific application.
- Remove Old Module: Disconnect all wiring and remove the faulty ignition module. Handle wiring carefully to avoid damage.
- Install New Module: Mount the Honeywell S8610U in the same location and position as the old unit. Use the spark cable adapters if needed for your existing setup.
- Reconnect & Test: Reconnect all wiring as per your documentation. Restore gas and electrical power, then cycle the heating appliance to verify correct ignition, flame sensing, and safety shutoff operation.
- Post-Service Checks: After successful operation, perform a gas leak check around all fittings if a gas valve was disturbed. Check for proper flue operation and ensure correct air/fuel mixture if adjustable.
Limitations & Safety Notes
- Installation and servicing of gas appliances must be performed by a licenced gas fitter and qualified electrician in accordance with local regulations and Australian Standards.
- Always isolate electrical power and ensure gas supply is shut off before commencing any work on heating appliances.
- This module is for intermittent pilot systems only; it is not suitable for direct spark ignition or hot surface ignition applications.
- Ensure correct grounding for reliable flame sensing. A poor ground can lead to nuisance lockouts.
When swapping out an old module, take an extra minute to clean the flame sensor rod with fine emery paper. A dirty sensor is a common cause of intermittent pilot issues, even with a new module. Good contact means reliable ignition.
Pair With
Pair with a suitable combination gas control valve, such as a Honeywell VR8204 or VR8304, and a multimeter for checking electrical continuity and voltage during installation. You might also find a digital manometer useful for checking gas pressures during commissioning.
