Digital Refrigerant Scales & Charging Scales

Get accurate, repeatable refrigerant charging and recovery on every job with our range of professional digital refrigerant scales and HVAC charging scales. These tools are built for Aussie HVAC-R techs working on split systems, ducted units, VRF/VRV, cold rooms and light commercial plant – not for weighing flour in the kitchen.

Why HVAC Techs Use Digital Refrigerant Scales

When you’re handling refrigerant, “near enough” isn’t good enough. A quality digital scale lets you measure charge and recovery by weight, so you can back up your work with real numbers – not guesses.

Typical use cases for these digital HVAC scales include:

  • Charging new installs to the manufacturer’s specified refrigerant weight.
  • Recovering gas into cylinders during repairs, retrofits or decommissioning.
  • Confirming system charge after leak repairs or component replacements.
  • Tracking refrigerant usage for large sites, service contracts and reporting.
  • Supporting efficiency work alongside digital gauges, leak detectors and vacuum pumps.

Combined with the right test & measurement tools , a good digital scale helps you dial in system performance, reduce repeat call-outs and protect your clients’ energy bills.

How to Choose the Right Digital Refrigerant Scale

Not sure which digital refrigerant scale fits your work? Use these quick checks before you buy:

1. Capacity & platform size

Most tradies working on residential and light-commercial gear are best served by a platform rated between 50 kg and 115 kg. Smaller 50 kg scales suit everyday service cylinders, while 100–115 kg platforms give you more headroom for larger jobs and recovery work.

2. Accuracy & resolution

Look for fine resolution (down to 5–10 g) and tight accuracy so you can charge confidently, especially on systems with smaller refrigerant volumes. A reliable scale helps you hit the correct weight instead of chasing superheat/subcooling forever.

3. Wireless, Bluetooth & app connectivity

Many of the scales in this collection include wireless handsets or Bluetooth connectivity, so you can watch live charge from the ground, on your phone or from a safe distance on rooftops and plant platforms. That’s particularly handy with larger cylinders and awkward locations.

4. Programmable charge & recovery alarms

On selected models you can dial in the target charge or recovery amount and let the scale sound an alarm when it reaches the setpoint. That frees you up to keep an eye on gauges, leak tests or paperwork while the system charges.

5. Durability & job-site friendliness

HVAC work is tough on tools. A good digital scale should have:

  • A rugged platform and edges that handle cylinder weight and daily knocks.
  • A bright, easy-to-read display for plant rooms, rooftops and basements.
  • A solid carry case to protect the scale between jobs.

6. Brand, warranty & local support

Choosing recognised HVAC brands like Mastercool, Fieldpiece, Javac, TIF, Hilmor and Accutools means better long-term support, parts and documentation. If something goes wrong, it’s easier to get help and keep your jobs moving.

Working Safely & Compliantly with Refrigerant

Owning a refrigerant scale is only one part of the picture. In Australia, handling scheduled refrigerants is licensed work, and technicians are expected to follow current refrigerant handling codes of practice and relevant Australian Standards. Your scale simply helps you measure charge accurately and document what you’ve done.

For guidance on safe refrigerant handling, licensing and best-practice work methods, always refer to official Australian resources and your compliance training. This collection page is general information only and does not replace formal licensing requirements.

Why Buy Your Digital Scale from HVAC Shop?

  • Specialist HVAC-R focus: Every scale in this collection is selected for refrigeration and air conditioning work – no generic bathroom scales here.
  • Trusted brands & local warranties: We partner with recognised manufacturers and Australian distributors for warranty support and spare parts.
  • Fast shipping Australia-wide: We ship across metro and regional Australia, with clear shipping & returns information before you check out.
  • Real HVAC help when you need it: Need help choosing between models, or kitting out a whole team? Our team is happy to talk through real-world use cases, not just read specs back at you.

Digital Refrigerant Scale FAQs

Do I need a digital refrigerant scale on every job?

Best practice is to use a scale whenever you’re charging or recovering refrigerant by weight. It’s especially important on systems with small charges, inverter and VRF systems, or where you’re documenting work for compliance or warranty. For quick top-ups on larger legacy systems some techs rely on pressures and temperatures, but a digital scale removes guesswork and helps avoid call-backs.

What capacity digital scale should I choose?

For most split, ducted and light-commercial work, a scale rated to 50–100 kg is ideal. If you regularly work with larger cylinders, recovery jobs or commercial plant, consider a 100–115 kg platform. Bigger isn’t always better – higher capacity can mean a heavier scale – so match the capacity to the work you actually do.

Are these digital scales suitable for R32, R410A and newer refrigerants?

Yes. A refrigerant scale measures weight only – it doesn’t care which gas is inside the cylinder. As long as the cylinder is approved and rated for the refrigerant you’re using, you can weigh R32, R410A, R134a, R22, HFO blends and more on the same scale. Always follow the cylinder, manifold and equipment manufacturer instructions.

Can I use these scales for non-HVAC jobs?

You can physically weigh other items on the platform, but these products are optimised for weighing refrigerant cylinders in HVAC-R work. If you need trade-legal weighing or specific industrial approvals, check those requirements separately before relying on a refrigerant scale outside its intended use.

Do I need a licence to buy or use a refrigerant scale in Australia?

You do not need a licence to buy a scale itself, but you do need appropriate licences and authorisations to handle scheduled refrigerants and to work on refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Always check current Australian refrigerant handling regulations and keep your licences up to date – your scale is simply one of the tools that helps you work accurately and responsibly.
